For dentist-led teeth whitening in Northampton, Cliftonville Dental on The Avenue is a sensible first call: it starts with a free consultation, uses Philips Zoom custom-tray whitening, and lists home whitening from £297. Northampton Dental Hub suits people who want more choice, including Enlighten and a one-hour in-surgery option, while Duston Dental Practice and The Private Dental Centre are worth comparing on price.
Most people who ask about whitening have tried the supermarket toothpaste already. It rarely shifts years of tea, coffee or red wine staining, and that is usually the point at which a dentist-supplied kit starts to look worth the money.
We compared four Northampton practices on what they actually publish: the whitening system, how the course works, the starting price and who checks your teeth first. If you are researching teeth whitening in Northampton, this should help you shortlist before you book a consultation.

What we checked
We read each practice's own whitening page and fee list in October 2026. We looked at the system used, how long the course takes, whether there is an in-surgery option, the published starting price and what happens before any gel is handed over. We did not attend as patients, and prices are "from" figures that the practices say can change after an assessment. Ask for the final price in writing.
1. Cliftonville Dental: a clear, tray-based course with a free first chat
Cliftonville Dental is a private practice at 65 The Avenue, Cliftonville, and it is our first suggestion for people who want a straightforward, dentist-checked course at home rather than a quick fix.
The practice uses Philips Zoom, a take-home system worn in trays made for your mouth. Its whitening page sets out four steps. First a consultation, where the dentist checks your teeth and gums and confirms whitening is suitable. Then impressions of your upper and lower teeth for the custom trays. You come back to collect the gel and trays and are shown how to use them. Finally you whiten at home, either with DayWhite for 30 to 90 minutes a day or NiteWhite overnight, usually over two weeks.
The page says the whole process takes three to four weeks with very little time in the chair, and that results are typically visible within the first three to five days of use. The fee list prices home tooth whitening from £297, with each extra gel syringe at £45, which matters because top-ups are how you keep the shade later on.
All treatment is carried out by GDC-registered dentists, and the page is direct about salons: whitening is a regulated dental procedure. The practice is open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5:30pm, plus one Saturday a month. Phone 01604 604545.
Suits: adults who want a supervised home course and a free conversation before committing.
2. Northampton Dental Hub: the widest choice of methods
Northampton Dental Hub is in St Peters Square in the town centre and takes enquiries seven days a week. Its fee page lists the most whitening options of the four: home trays and gel from £300, a one-hour in-surgery whitening session from £450, and Enlighten whitening from £700.
Before any of these, there is a £25 whitening consultation, which the practice says is normally with its dental hygienist and is designed to check your suitability because "not all patients are". It also says its fees do not change for weekend or late appointments.
Suits: people who want to compare home and in-surgery options in one place, or need a weekend slot.
3. Duston Dental Practice: a combined in-clinic and home option
Duston Dental Practice has two sites, on Main Road in Duston and at St Crispin, and opens Monday to Friday from 7:45am to 6pm. Its whitening page describes two routes. Home-only whitening uses custom trays worn overnight for around 10 to 14 days. The in-clinic route is a two-hour appointment that the practice says covers about 80% of the course, followed by about two weeks of home trays.
Treatment starts from £329. The standard kit includes up to six weeks of gel, and you keep the trays for future top-ups. The practice says it has offered whitening for more than 20 years. Phone 01604 753312.
Suits: early starters and people west of the town centre who want a head start in the chair.
4. The Private Dental Centre, 44 Derngate: the lowest listed fee
The Private Dental Centre, run by Northants Dental Ltd at 44 Derngate, lists tooth whitening at £150 on its fees page, the lowest figure of the four. The page does not name the system or say whether that price is for trays, gel or both, so ask exactly what is included before you book. Phone 01604 439270.
Suits: people who are price-led and happy to ask a few extra questions first.
Home trays or in-surgery whitening?
Both routes use a bleaching gel. The difference is mostly time and convenience. Home whitening spreads the work over one to two weeks of daily or overnight wear, and the trays can be reused later. In-surgery whitening speeds up the start, but most practices still follow it with a short home course to reach and hold the shade.
- Home trays suit people who are happy to wear trays every day or night and want reusable trays for top-ups.
- In-surgery plus home suits people who want visible change sooner, for example before an event.
- Systems such as Enlighten are usually the most expensive option and often combine a longer home phase with a surgery visit.
Whichever you choose, whitening only works on natural teeth. Cliftonville Dental's page and Duston Dental Practice's page both point out that crowns, veneers and fillings will not change colour, so they may stand out afterwards.
Is it safe, and who can legally do it?
The NHS is blunt about where to go. Its teeth whitening page says, "Using a kit from a dentist, or having it done at a dental surgery, is the safest way to have teeth whitening." It adds that whitening from beauty salons, or with kits bought online or from a pharmacy, does not work as well and may harm your teeth and gums.
A few other points from NHS guidance are worth knowing before you pay:
- Teeth whitening is not available on the NHS, so you pay as a private patient.
- It is not done for people aged 17 or under, or if your teeth or gums are unhealthy.
- Possible side effects include sensitivity to cold or sweet foods, and sore gums.
- It is not permanent. The NHS says the effect may last for around three years if you follow your dentist's advice.
You can check that the person treating you is a registered dental professional on the General Dental Council register, and dental practices in England are regulated by the Care Quality Commission.
Questions to ask before you book
- Will a dentist check my teeth and gums first, and is that consultation free?
- Which system do you use, and how long is the course?
- Does the price include the trays, the gel and a review appointment?
- How much is a top-up syringe later?
- What happens if my teeth become sensitive during the course?
- Will any of my crowns or fillings need replacing to match?
Frequently asked questions
How much does teeth whitening cost in Northampton?
From the fee pages we checked in October 2026, dentist-led whitening starts at £150 at The Private Dental Centre and runs to £700 or more for Enlighten at Northampton Dental Hub. Cliftonville Dental lists home whitening from £297 and Duston Dental Practice from £329.
How quickly will I see a difference?
It depends on the method and your starting shade. Cliftonville Dental says results with its Philips Zoom trays are typically visible within the first three to five days, with the full course usually taking two weeks of home use.
Does whitening damage enamel?
When prescribed by a dentist and used as directed, professional whitening is considered safe. Side effects such as sensitivity are usually temporary. Your dentist should check your teeth and gums before you start.
Can I get whitening on the NHS?
No. The NHS says teeth whitening is not available on the NHS, so you pay as a private patient at a dental surgery.
